The destination
Shawinigan is not something you visit in a flash. You settle in. Facing the Saint-Maurice river, the Au5000 chalet becomes the fixed point of a stay that radiates throughout the Mauricie region: nature as far as the eye can see, the city center within easy reach, and the hustle and bustle of big cities far enough away that you forget about it.
The river stretches out in front of the chalet and sets the tone for the day. It's what you look at when you wake up, what you follow on foot, by kayak or by canoe. The Mauricie takes its name from this waterway that shaped the region, and it flows right across from the deck.
Downtown Shawinigan stays close at hand: its restaurants, shops and buzz are there without planning an expedition. Head out in the morning for the forest, come back for dinner in town, return to the chalet at night, never feeling like you spent the whole day on the road.
Shawinigan sits roughly an hour and a half by road from Montréal, and Québec City isn't far either. Close enough for a weekend escape, far enough out to truly change the air. The Mauricie begins where the city ends.
From the chalet, the whole region is within reach: La Mauricie National Park for big nature outings, the Cité de l'Énergie for industrial history, the Vallée du Parc resort for winter. Explore by day, come back to rest at night. And the indoor pool extends the day, whatever the weather.
